Dual Citizenship

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines explicitly permits dual or multiple citizenship. There is no requirement to renounce a previous nationality upon naturalization. Vincentians who acquire foreign citizenship do not automatically lose their SVG nationality.

Acquisition of Nationality

By Birth (Jus Soli)

A child born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a citizen by birth if at least one parent is a citizen or lawfully settled resident at the time of birth. Children of diplomats and foreign government representatives are excluded.

By Descent (Jus Sanguinis)

A child born outside Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a citizen by descent if either parent was a Vincentian citizen at the time of the child’s birth. Registration is typically required within a reasonable period; requirements vary by generation.

By Adoption

A child adopted by a Vincentian citizen may be registered as a citizen. The adoption must be legally recognized under SVG law. Processing is handled by the Department of Immigration.

By Marriage

A foreign national married to a Vincentian citizen may apply for registration as a citizen after fulfilling a qualifying residence period — typically 3 years of marriage combined with lawful residence. Applicants must demonstrate genuine marital relationship and good character.

By Naturalization

Eligibility:

  • 10 years of lawful ordinary residence in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (reduced to 5 years for Commonwealth citizens in some cases)
  • Renunciation of other citizenships is NOT required
  • Must be of good character with no serious criminal record
  • Must intend to continue residing in SVG (or maintain substantial connection)

Process:

  1. Submit application to Department of Immigration
  2. Provide supporting documents (see Practical Guide below)
  3. Background and character checks conducted
  4. Approval by Minister responsible for immigration
  5. Take oath of allegiance
  6. Citizenship certificate issued

Citizenship by Investment

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines does not currently operate a formal Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program. The country is a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and CARICOM, providing Vincentian citizens with freedom of movement rights throughout the region.

Business and Entrepreneurship

SVG offers a relatively open business environment with advantages for those interested in Caribbean operations:

  • CARICOM membership: Free movement and trade within the Caribbean Community
  • OECS single market: Enhanced integration with Eastern Caribbean economies
  • Tourism sector: The Grenadines chain is a premium sailing and luxury tourism destination
  • Offshore financial services: Limited but available
  • No capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax
  • Corporate tax rate: 30% (standard)

Loss of Nationality

Vincentian citizenship may be lost in the following circumstances:

  • Voluntary renunciation: A citizen of full age may renounce citizenship by declaration, provided they hold or are acquiring another nationality
  • Deprivation: The government may deprive a naturalized citizen of citizenship if obtained by fraud, false representation, or concealment; or if the person has shown disloyalty or disaffection to the state
  • Citizens by birth cannot be deprived of citizenship except in very limited circumstances involving dual nationals who act contrary to SVG interests
