Dual Citizenship

Yes — St. Kitts and Nevis fully allows dual and multiple citizenship. No renunciation of any existing nationality is required when acquiring Kittitian/Nevisian citizenship by investment or any other means. This is one of the foundational features of the program — investors retain their existing citizenship(s) while gaining a second passport.

St. Kitts and Nevis citizenship grants the holder and their family visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 156 countries, including the entire Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, and most of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Acquisition of Nationality

By Birth (Jus Soli)

A person born in St. Kitts and Nevis is a citizen by birth if:

  • At least one parent is a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis at the time of birth, OR
  • The person would otherwise be stateless

Children born in St. Kitts and Nevis to foreign parents do not automatically acquire citizenship purely by place of birth (qualified jus soli), unless statelessness would result.

By Descent (Jus Sanguinis)

Citizenship is transmitted by descent through either parent. A person born outside St. Kitts and Nevis to at least one citizen parent is a citizen by descent. The citizenship can be registered with the appropriate authority.

Second-generation and beyond: descendants of citizens may apply for registration, but citizenship by descent does not automatically transmit indefinitely to subsequent generations born and raised entirely abroad without connection to St. Kitts and Nevis.

By Adoption

A child adopted by a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis acquires citizenship upon completion of the legal adoption, provided the adoption is recognized under Kittitian/Nevisian law.

By Marriage

A foreign national married to a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis may apply for registration as a citizen after 3 years of marriage, provided the marriage is genuine and subsisting. The applicant must be of good character and must not be a security risk.

By Naturalization (Residency)

Standard naturalization requires 14 years of ordinary residence — one of the longest residency requirements in the world. This is by design: the standard naturalization route is intentionally restrictive, making the CBI program the primary practical pathway to citizenship.

Requirements:

  • 14 years lawful ordinary residence
  • Adequate knowledge of English
  • Good character
  • Intention to remain resident
  • No serious criminal convictions

Special Clauses & Programs

World’s Oldest CBI Program

St. Kitts and Nevis established its citizenship by investment program in 1984 — over 40 years ago — making it the world’s oldest continuously operating CBI program. The program predates all other Caribbean CBI programs and has granted citizenship to tens of thousands of investors and their families from over 100 countries. Its long track record is a significant credibility advantage.

CARICOM Membership

As a CARICOM member, Kittitian/Nevisian citizens enjoy free movement and the right to seek employment across the 15-nation Caribbean Community. This includes Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Jamaica, and Guyana, among others.

Tax Haven Status

St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the most favorable tax jurisdictions in the Western Hemisphere:

  • No personal income tax
  • No capital gains tax
  • No wealth tax
  • No inheritance tax
  • No estate duty
  • No gift tax

This is a significant draw for high-net-worth individuals seeking to establish legal tax residency. There is no requirement to establish residency to maintain citizenship, but those who do reside there benefit from the zero-tax environment.

Accelerated Application Process (AAP)

St. Kitts and Nevis offers an Accelerated Application Process for urgent cases:

  • Processing time: 15–45 days (vs. 45–60 standard)
  • Additional fee: $25,000 per application
  • Same due diligence standards apply

Investment Pathways

Citizenship by Investment (CBI)

Program Name: St. Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Programme Legal Basis: Citizenship by Investment Act, 1984; Saint Christopher and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Regulations Status: Active Administering Body: Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU)

St. Kitts and Nevis CBI offers three primary investment routes. No physical presence is required at any stage — neither to apply nor to maintain citizenship. The passport can be renewed from abroad.

Option 1: Sustainable Growth Fund (SGF)

A non-refundable contribution to the government’s Sustainable Growth Fund, used for national development:

Applicant ConfigurationContribution
Single applicant$250,000
Main applicant + spouse$300,000
Main applicant + spouse + up to 2 children (under 18)$300,000
Each additional dependent under 18$10,000
Each additional dependent aged 18–30 (student, financially dependent)$25,000
Each additional dependent parent or grandparent$25,000
Sibling of main applicant (18+)$25,000

This is the most popular option due to its simplicity and no asset management requirements after the contribution.

Option 2: Real Estate Investment

Investment in a government-approved real estate development:

OptionMinimum InvestmentHolding Period
Approved real estate (standard)$400,0007 years
Approved real estate (premium)$800,0005 years
  • The property must be from the government-approved list of developments
  • The full investment amount must be paid before citizenship is granted
  • After the holding period, the investor may sell (potentially to another CBI-eligible buyer)
  • Additional government fees apply (~$25,000–$50,000 for standard option)
  • The property qualifies for personal use or rental income

Option 3: Public Benefit Option (PBO)

A newer alternative pathway for investment in approved public benefit projects:

  • Minimum: $250,000 (non-refundable)
  • Similar to the SGF but directed toward specific approved infrastructure and public benefit initiatives
  • Processing and due diligence identical to SGF

Due Diligence

StageDescription
Tier 1Authorized agent pre-screening
Tier 2CIU internal review
Tier 3Independent third-party due diligence (international firms)
Tier 4Inter-agency security checks (intelligence vetting)

All adults in the application are fully vetted. The program has faced international pressure over due diligence standards and has significantly strengthened its process since 2016.

Physical Presence Requirements

None. This is one of the most attractive features of the St. Kitts program. Applicants do not need to:

  • Visit St. Kitts and Nevis to apply
  • Travel to St. Kitts and Nevis for an interview (no interview required)
  • Reside in St. Kitts and Nevis to maintain citizenship
  • Travel to St. Kitts and Nevis to renew the passport

Family Inclusion

The program offers among the most generous family inclusion policies of any CBI program:

DependentIncluded?
Spouse / registered partnerYes
Children under 18Yes
Children 18–30 (full-time student, financially dependent, unmarried)Yes
Parents over 65 (financially dependent)Yes
Grandparents over 65 (financially dependent)Yes
Siblings of main applicant (18+, financially dependent)Yes — unique feature

Sibling inclusion is a distinctive feature not offered by most other CBI programs.

Passport Power

Visa-free destinations~156
Schengen accessYes (visa-free)
UK accessYes (visa-free, 6 months)
US accessNo (B1/B2 visa required)
Canada accessNo (eTA required for air travel)

Recent Developments (2024–2026)

  • Price increase 2023: The SGF contribution was raised from $150,000 (single) to $250,000, aligning pricing with Antigua and Barbuda
  • Enhanced due diligence: Following UK and EU travel agreement pressure, the CIU strengthened its vetting process in 2023–2024
  • Visa-free UK maintained: Despite Brexit, St. Kitts passport holders retain visa-free access to the UK
  • OECD transparency: St. Kitts has committed to Common Reporting Standard (CRS) information exchange — financial privacy is limited compared to historical norms

Residency by Investment (RBI)

St. Kitts and Nevis does not have a formal standalone Residency by Investment program. However, investors who hold property in the federation may apply for a Certificate of Permanent Residency separately from the CBI program. Most investors proceed directly to citizenship rather than residency, given the lack of any residency requirement.

Business & Entrepreneurship

Company Formation

Primary entity typeInternational Business Company (IBC) or local LLC
Formation timeline1–3 business days
Minimum capitalNo statutory minimum for IBCs
Foreign ownership100% permitted
Public registryNot required for IBCs (beneficial for privacy)

St. Kitts offers offshore company formation through its Nevis LLC and IBC structures, which are particularly popular for asset protection and international business. The Nevis LLC (established 1995) is renowned in asset protection planning circles for its charging order protection and multi-member flexibility.

Tax Overview

Personal income tax0%
Capital gains tax0%
Wealth tax0%
Inheritance / estate tax0%
Gift tax0%
Corporate tax33% on locally-sourced income (IBCs typically 0%)
VAT17% (standard)
Withholding tax on dividends0% (for non-residents)

For CBI holders who establish residency: St. Kitts and Nevis is a zero personal tax jurisdiction. No income tax on worldwide income for residents. No capital gains. No inheritance tax. Combined with the second passport, this makes St. Kitts citizenship a powerful tool for international tax planning when combined with legal relocation.

Note: CBI citizenship does not automatically change your tax residency. Tax obligations in your home country (especially the US, which taxes citizens worldwide) remain unaffected by obtaining a second passport unless you physically relocate.

Banking & Financial Infrastructure

  • Local banks: St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank (SKNANB), Bank of Nevis, TDC Financial Services
  • International correspondent banking: Maintained through US and Canadian correspondent banks
  • Opening accounts as CBI holder: Possible with citizenship certificate and local address; some banks require in-person visit
  • Offshore banking (Nevis): The Nevis International Business Corporation Act makes Nevis a significant offshore financial center

Key Programs & Incentives

  • St. Kitts and Nevis Investment Promotion Agency — facilitates FDI in tourism, manufacturing, financial services, and technology
  • Free Trade Zone: St. Kitts has a free trade zone at the Port Zante area
  • Tourism-related exemptions: Duty-free import of equipment for approved tourism projects
  • No corporate tax on international business income for IBCs properly structured under Nevis law
  • Low cost of living vs. comparable Caribbean islands: Nevis especially known for quality lifestyle at moderate cost

Loss of Nationality

Voluntary Renunciation

A Kittitian/Nevisian citizen may renounce citizenship by submitting a declaration of renunciation to the Minister responsible for citizenship. Renunciation takes effect from the date of registration. It cannot render a person stateless.

Involuntary Loss

Citizenship may be involuntarily deprived in cases where:

  • It was obtained by fraud, false representation, or concealment of material fact — the CIU has the power to revoke CBI-granted citizenship if due diligence reveals post-grant misrepresentation
  • The citizen has acted in a manner seriously prejudicial to the vital interests of St. Kitts and Nevis
  • Service in the armed forces of an enemy state during wartime

Deprivation cannot result in statelessness.

Recovery / Resumption

Former citizens who renounced or lost citizenship may apply to the Minister for re-registration on a discretionary basis. Each case is assessed individually.
